Frequently Asked Questions: Teaching in Australia as a qualified UK Teacher

What requirements are there to teach in Australia as a qualified UK Teacher?

To teach in Australia as UK Teacher, you’ll need to meet several key requirements, including:

  • Tertiary Level Educational Experience: You generally must hold university qualifications that include an accredited pre-service teacher education program. This often equates to a four-year teaching degree, or an undergraduate degree in a specific discipline plus a postgraduate teaching degree (e.g., Master of Teaching). Your UK qualifications are your foundation for this exciting move!
  • Valid Work Visa: You must hold a valid work visa that permits you to work in Australia.
  • Teacher Registration: It is mandatory for all teachers in Australia to be registered with the relevant state or territory authority where they intend to teach.
  • Police Checks: You will need both an Australian National Police Check and an international police history check from any country where you have resided for more than 12 continuous months in the past 10 years while over 18 years of age. These checks must typically have been issued within the last 12 months.
  • Certified Documents: You will need certified copies of your official academic transcripts from your university studies.
  • Identification: Providing 100 points of identification is a standard requirement for various processes, including teacher registration.

What visa options are available for UK teachers looking to work in Australia?

While Talent Focus is not a migration agency, the below is a summary of the most common visa options. Always refer to the official Australian Government website for the most current information: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder

  • Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417): For UK citizens eager to teach and explore in Australia, this is a popular pathway. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months per grant. UK passport holders granted a Working Holiday Visa from 1 July 2024 can be granted up to three separate Working Holiday visas without needing to meet specified work requirements. The application fee is currently AUD $670.00.
  • Partner Visa: This visa pathway is for individuals in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, offering a route to permanent residency.

Do I need a police check to teach in Australia?

Yes, you will need to provide both an Australian National Police Check and an international police history check from any country where you have resided for more than 12 continuous months in the past 10 years while over 18 years of age. These checks must typically have been issued within the last 12 months. Specific states have their own requirements:

  • In New South Wales, a NSW Working With Children Check (WWCC) is mandatory for anyone working with children. The application for paid work is free, but it must be applied for while you are in NSW at a Service NSW centre.
  • As part of the VIT registration process in Victoria, a National Police History Check (NPHC) is conducted by VIT. There are also requirements for overseas police checks if you have lived outside Australia for 12 months or more within the last 10 years after turning 18.
  • As part of the QCT registration process in Queensland, a criminal history check is conducted. You will also need to provide relevant overseas criminal history checks if you have lived outside Australia for a cumulative period of 12 months or more within the last 10 years, since turning 18.

Additionally, if you have resided in any country outside Australia for a cumulative period of 12 months or more (since turning 18) within the last 10 years, you will need to provide an overseas criminal history check for that country. The TRBWA often works with approved providers for these checks.
